deal.II Debian Package

This page documents the Debian packaging for the deal.II finite element library. You can read more about the library itself in the deal.ii-doc package documentation.

Package organization

The deal.ii source package builds six binary packages:

• libdeal.ii-dev contains symbolic links to the optimized shared libraries using the deal.II library names, all of the header files in /usr/include/deal.II, and all of the common/ files in /usr/share/deal.II
• libdeal.ii6.2.1 contains the optimized shared libraries
• libdeal.ii-dbg contains symbolic links to the debugging shared libraries using the deal.II library names
• libdeal.ii-dbg6.2.1 contains the debugging shared libraries
• deal.ii-doc contains all of the documentation, including that generated from source code by doxygen
• deal.ii-examples contains the source code of tutorial examples, whose documentation is in the deal.ii-doc package

To run the examples in the -examples package, you should be able to do:

cp -a /usr/share/doc/deal.ii-examples/step-1 .
cd step-1
make run

If this doesn't work, with step-1 or any of the other examples, please report the bug.

Known bugs

• The Makefiles in the -examples package do not work.
• These libraries do not link directly to the PETSc libraries on which they depend, but on the libpetsccall[.g].so library which in turn links to the PETSc libraries. This is not good linking practice; they should link directly instead.
• It is not clear that the debugging and optimized libraries are significantly different, or are even linked from different object files. The Debian packaging doesn't strip debugging symbols from the debugging libraries, but at this point that is the only known difference.
